Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann 2026 — What You Need to Know
Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann is the world's biggest celebration of Irish traditional music, song, dance, and culture. Run by Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann, it moves to a different Irish town or city each year — and in 2026 it makes history by coming to Belfast for the first time since 1954, marking Comhaltas's 75th anniversary.
The scale is difficult to overstate. Over 800,000 visitors are expected across eight days. More than 400 events including All-Ireland competitions in music, song, and dance. Sessions spilling out of pubs and onto streets from morning to late at night. A UNESCO City of Music as the backdrop. If you've never been to a Fleadh, this is the year to go.

What Happens at the Fleadh
The Fleadh operates on several levels simultaneously. At its competitive core are the All-Ireland championships — musicians, singers, and dancers who have qualified through county and provincial level competitions competing for All-Ireland titles across hundreds of categories. These competitions run throughout the week at venues across the city and are free to watch.
Alongside the competitions, the streets come alive with sessions. In any pub within a mile of the city centre you'll find musicians playing informally — céilí bands, solo instrumentalists, singers, and everything in between. This is the soul of the Fleadh and it costs nothing to experience. Walk into any pub and follow the sound.
There are also outdoor concerts and stage shows, Scoil Éigse (a week-long traditional music school), céilí dancing events open to everyone, and a family programme throughout.
Why Belfast in 2026 is Significant
This is only the second time in 75 years that Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann has been held north of the border. The previous occasion was Derry in 2013 — still widely talked about for the atmosphere it created and the sense of occasion around it. Belfast in 2026 carries that same weight, particularly given the city's musical heritage as the only UNESCO City of Music on the island of Ireland.
For many Irish people, crossing the border to attend the Fleadh in Belfast will feel significant in a way that goes beyond the music. That's part of what makes this edition particularly worth attending.
Getting to Belfast
Belfast is approximately two hours from Dublin by train (Enterprise service from Connolly Station) or by road via the M1. There are also direct flights into Belfast International and Belfast City Airport from UK and European cities. The city is compact and walkable — the festival venues are spread through the city centre and are easily reached on foot from most hotels.
Belfast City Council has published traffic and travel plans for the festival week. Using Park & Ride on the city's outskirts with shuttle buses into the centre is strongly advised. Do not attempt to drive into Belfast city centre during the Fleadh.
Accommodation
Belfast city centre was already at 95% capacity for the first week of August at the time of writing. If city centre is full, look at the Queen's Quarter and Titanic Quarter areas with dedicated Fleadh shuttle buses. Queen's University Belfast is also offering affordable ensuite rooms for the period. Book immediately if you haven't already.
